Message from PTA President Usha Archer

This is my last post to you as PTA President.  It has been a fun and fulfilling year and we hope all the students, families and staff enjoyed all the events the PTA has sponsored.  Most recently, the PTA sponsored the Spring Spectacular, Teacher Appreciation Week, Brock Edwards Magic Family Night, Campus Cleanup, and the upcoming Lincoln 500.

First a big thanks to our Board:  Sarah Kauffman, Executive VP, in her final year at Lincoln and has served PTA in a variety of board positions and a voice of reason and authority; Christine Cassin, your incoming PTA President and current 1st VP, and involved in so many things such as the family nights, Meet the Masters, Ghoul School; Christie Lipscomb, 2nd VP of Volunteers and involved in Founders Night, Teacher Appreciation, coordinating the many class parties with the room parents and getting volunteers; Leslie Clay, 3rd VP of Fundraising, bringing the PTA dollars through the Fall and Spring fundraisers, and being involved in the Ghoul School; Jacqui Boone, Recording Secretary, for recording all our activity, making sure we follow through, and volunteering at many events; Wendy Edelstein, Treasurer, for paying all the bills, reimbursing the volunteers for their PTA activities and many classroom activities; Sylvia Avanosian, our Financial Secretary, for making sure deposits were made and reconciled as well as volunteering at many events; Sherry Owens, our Auditor, to make sure our financial records are accurate, and is practically volunteering at every event; Regina Martin, our Historian, who kept track of all our volunteer hours, and documenting our activities, and various volunteer activities; and Scott Trulik, our Parliamentarian, who made sure we followed the rules and volunteered at many activities as well.

Our chairpersons are no different in their dedication.  These individuals with their many helpers do multiple volunteer activities as well as serve as room parents or in general, are always there when we need them: Deby Bailey, Heidi Clark, Cheryl Duncan, Mark Edelstein, Ashley and Duane Fernandez, Rob and Sarah Hilburn, Christine and Todd Marks, Rozana Mirzakhanian, Kate Smurr, Grainne Ong Yiu, Kathy Ranek, Amy Taylor, Julie Taylor, Ronnie Tucker and Mark Pappas, Jeanne Watnick, Gina Wells, and Laurie Wilson.

Notice a pattern?  All these volunteers served their position, and then some.  I didn't list everything they do, but their dedication is awesome!  There are many more PTA volunteers I've not named here that do double, triple and quadruple duty and do so selflessly and usually without recognition. I thank you all for your efforts for making this school year another successful year at Lincoln.  Please continue to support the PTA by becoming a member next year and helping out, even if just for an hour now and again.

Lastly, but most deservedly, I thank Mr. Card, Mrs. Gilbaugh, Mrs. Barrantes, Mrs. Colgan and all the teachers and staff at Lincoln for allowing us to help where we can and provide activities for the betterment of all.  All the coordination of events with the school happens with the help of the Lincoln team.  Everyone is so supportive and engaged in the school activities.

THANK YOU TO ALL FOR ALL THAT YOU DO!

Next meeting: September   in the Lincoln Auditorium at 7 p.m.

California School Funding Ballot Initiative
The California State PTA announced that it is mobilizing its nearly 1 million members to support Californians for Improved School Funding's ballot initiative, the Local Control of Local Classrooms Funding Act (www.improvedschoolfunding.com/). If qualified for the November 2010 ballot and approved by voters, the proposed Act would lower the threshold for passage of educational parcel taxes to 55 percent, from the current 66 2/3 percent (2/3rds) provided certain requirements are met. These include advance disclosure on how funds will be spent, annual audits, oversight by an independent citizens' committee, and offering an exemption to senior citizens. Funds raised under the initiative could not be taken or offset by the state in its educational funding decisions. For more information about this initiative, go to http://www.improvedschoolfunding.com/. (

Short-term Project Volunteers Needed Volunteers who are available to work on short-term projects from home. Periodically, volunteers are needed to research information, locate businesses, get estimates/bids, find the best deal, etc. If you're a working parent or haven't had the time to volunteer, this a great way to help. Contact Usha Archer for more information - president@golincolnlions.org

Translators Needed
Lincoln families sometimes need help understanding school news and events if English is not the primary language for the parents and/or grandparents. GUSD has many fantastic interpretors and translators for school items, but
Lincoln PTA needs help. We currently have parent volunteers who helps with Korean and Armenian, but we don't have a Spanish language volunteer. Please contact Usha Archer if you are able to translate documents into Spanish -

Paper Reduction at Lincoln
Last year was a success. We have completed the transition to on-line communication at Lincoln. The Thursday folder is changing this
year. Families need to sign-up for e-mail bulletins in order to receive information on up-coming events and activities. Families who do not have access to e-mail can pick up copies of flyer's in the Lincoln office. Additional information will be sent out to all families in upcoming Thursday folders explaining the new system
